Sausage Balls

If party appetizers are what you’re looking for – you’ve come to the right place. I’m obsessed with appetizers. I take full advantage of sport seasons and big games to go a little crazy in the kitchen whipping up all manner of eats and treats for friends and family. There is simply nothing better than sitting down to watch your team play while snacking on some seriously fantastic food.

We love all kinds of appetizers: dips, pinwheels, meatballs, sweets and treats and everything else that is little and tasty. Today I’m sharing these classic Spicy Italian Sausage Cheese Balls that are always a hit at parties.

Many of you probably know them by the name of Bisquick Sausage Balls because that is the “secret” ingredient to this sausage ball recipe.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Sausage Balls

You’ll find these sausage balls similar to meatballs but different enough to make them interesting. I make mine with spicy Italian sausage so there’s a ton of flavor and heat to start with. If you’d like to tone down the spice a bit, use a pork sausage or non-spicy Italian sausage and you’ll be good to go.

I used a Mexican cheese blend for this particular batch but you can use any cheese you like. If you really like things spicy, try pepper jack cheese in this recipe – so good!

Speaking of spicy, don’t let the spicy in the title scare you off. While the spicy Italian sausage does add some heat, it’s not overpowering at all. If you’re still nervous, feel free to make the recipe with regular Italian sausage.

All you need is your favorite baking mix, like Bisquick, an egg, some milk, and some garlic powder. If you’re up for it, adding some green onions an a bit of Worcestershire sauce can change the flavor just enough to keep things interesting.

I serve these Spicy Italian Sausage Cheese Balls with spicy ranch dip, my favorite barbecue sauce, and marinara sauce. It’s a dip fest!

Can You Refrigerate Sausage Balls Before Cooking

Yes. Absolutely. Just add a couple minutes to the cook time and let sit out at room temperature while the oven is preheating.

Can You Freeze Sausage Balls

Yep, you sure can. Place sausage balls on a rimmed baking sheet and place in freezer for one hour. Remove from the baking sheet and place in a freezer bag. Sausage balls can be frozen for up to 6 months.

Tips for Making the Best Sausage Balls

  • Use high quality sausage. Whether you end up using Italian sausage or pork sausage with less heat, make sure to buy a high quality sausage. You CAN taste the difference.
  • When you first add the Bisquick, it’s going to seem like a ridiculous amount. You really have to work it in with your hands so give it a minute and you’ll be fine.
  • Serve with a variety of dipping sauces for your guests. Ranch, marinara, and BBQ sauce are some of our favorites.
  • Pile ’em up on a big platter and use some cute cocktail picks for easy pick-up for your guests. So fun and extra delicious!
